Working From Home in Shapewear? Here's Why Remote Workers Are Converting

When I started working from home in 2024, I went full pajama mode. No bra, no real pants, definitely no shapewear. Why would anyone wear compression garments to sit on their couch? Fast forward 18 months: I'm writing this article wearing high-waist shaping shorts and a posture-support tank. And I'm never going back to the pajama era.

The Problem With Permanent Pajama Mode

Six months into remote work, I noticed my posture had deteriorated dramatically. I was slouching into my couch, hunching over my laptop on the kitchen table, and developing what my physiotherapist called "tech neck." My lower back hurt constantly. I felt sluggish and unmotivated. Research actually backs this up — what you wear affects your productivity and mental state. It's called "enclothed cognition."

The Experiment

A colleague mentioned she wears light shapewear during her workday for the posture support. I thought she was joking. She wasn't. She wore a posture corrector vest under a comfortable top and said it was the single biggest improvement to her WFH setup — more than her standing desk or ergonomic chair.

I decided to try it. Not a firm compression bodysuit — that would be overkill for home. Just light, comfortable pieces that provide structure without restriction.

My WFH Shapewear Routine

Morning meetings (camera on): A smooth shaping bodysuit under a nice top. I look polished from the waist up and comfortable from the waist down.

Deep work days (camera off): High-waist shaping shorts with a soft t-shirt. The compression on my core keeps me sitting upright without thinking about it.

Afternoon slump: When I feel myself melting into the couch at 3pm, the shapewear physically prevents full slouch mode. It's like a gentle reminder to maintain posture.

What Actually Changed

  • Back pain reduced by 70% — my physiotherapist confirmed my posture had improved significantly
  • More productive mornings — getting "dressed" (even in shapewear + casual clothes) signals my brain that it's work time
  • Better video call presence — I look more professional without having to wear actual office clothes
  • Less snacking — gentle core compression naturally reduces mindless eating (unexpected bonus)

The Rule I Follow

I don't wear shapewear ALL day at home. I put it on when I start work (around 9am) and take it off when I close my laptop (around 5pm). Evenings are still pajama time. The structure of "shapewear on = work mode, shapewear off = relax mode" has actually helped me maintain better work-life boundaries.

If you work from home and struggle with posture, motivation, or the pajama-to-meeting pipeline, try this. It sounds weird. It works.
