I'm Plus-Size and I Tried 5 Different Body Shapers — Here's My Honest Ranking

Finding shapewear when you're a size 2XL is an exercise in frustration. Most brands stop at XL, and the ones that go bigger often just scale up a small design without rethinking the construction. After years of disappointment, I decided to do a proper test — five different body shapers over five weeks, all in my size, all judged on the same criteria.

What I Tested

I tested five styles: a full bodysuit, high-waist shorts, a waist cincher, open-bust bodysuit, and a zippered full-body shaper. I wore each one for a full work week (5 days) and rated them on comfort, compression, roll-down resistance, and how they looked under a fitted dress.

#5: The Waist Cincher

The waist cincher belt was comfortable but too narrow for my torso. It kept riding up throughout the day. Fine for an hour or two, but not for all-day wear at my size. If you're using it for gym sessions though, it's great.

Rating: 3/5

#4: High-Waist Shorts

Good compression on the tummy and thighs, but the waistband rolled down every time I sat. This is the universal complaint with high-waist shorts above size XL — the waistband simply can't resist the pressure without boning or a zipper to anchor it.

Rating: 3.5/5

#3: Open-Bust Bodysuit

Better than the shorts because the shoulder straps prevent roll-down. The open bust meant I could wear my own bra, which is crucial at larger cup sizes. Smooth under clothes, comfortable for 6-8 hours.

Rating: 4/5

#2: Full Bodysuit with Built-In Bra

The full-body sculpting bodysuit was my daily driver for the test week. The all-in-one design meant nothing shifted, nothing rolled, nothing bunched. The built-in bra was surprisingly supportive for my DD cups. The only reason it's not #1 is bathroom trips — you basically have to undress.

Rating: 4.5/5

#1: Zippered Full-Body Shaper

The winner. The front zipper solved the bathroom problem entirely. The compression was firm but breathable. Nothing rolled, nothing shifted. I wore this under a body-con dress to a wedding and received three compliments on my "figure." That says everything.

Rating: 5/5

My Tips for Plus-Size Shapewear Shopping

  • Always go for adjustable closures — hooks, zippers, or velcro. Pull-on styles are harder to size correctly
  • Boning prevents roll-down — look for styles with side boning if you struggle with waistband rolling
  • Check the size guide — and measure yourself. Don't guess.
  • Full-body styles work better at larger sizes — they distribute compression more evenly and stay anchored
