The Conversation I Had With My Doctor About Postpartum Recovery (That Every New Mom Needs to Hear)

At my 6-week postpartum checkup, my doctor asked how I was recovering. I said "fine." She looked at me the way only a female OB-GYN who has heard that lie ten thousand times can, and said: "Tell me what's actually going on."

What followed was the most honest and helpful conversation I'd had since giving birth. I'm sharing it because I wish someone had told me these things at week 1, not week 6.

"Your Core Didn't Just Stretch — It Separated"

My doctor checked my diastasis recti (the gap between my abdominal muscles) and found a 3-finger-width separation. She explained this is completely normal — and completely fixable — but it doesn't fix itself. It needs targeted recovery. She recommended gentle core engagement exercises AND external support from a postpartum compression garment.

"Compression Isn't Vanity — It's Recovery"

I felt embarrassed admitting I'd bought postpartum shapewear. I thought she'd roll her eyes. Instead, she said she recommends it to most of her patients. The gentle compression supports weakened muscles, reminds your body of proper alignment, and can reduce swelling. She specifically recommended a wrap-style garment for early recovery and a structured shaper for weeks 4 and beyond.

"Stop Googling Your Recovery Timeline"

She could tell I'd been comparing myself to influencers who "bounced back" in 8 weeks. Her words: "Recovery takes 6-12 months for most women. The ones posting bikini photos at 6 weeks either had genetics, surgery, or a filter. Probably all three." She told me to delete Instagram from my phone for a month. I did. It helped enormously.

"Your Pelvic Floor Needs Attention Too"

Nobody talks about this. I was leaking urine when I sneezed, and I thought it was just "what happens after you have a baby." My doctor referred me to a pelvic floor physiotherapist and recommended wearing a pelvic recovery shaper to provide external support while I strengthened the internal muscles.

"You Don't Have to Suffer Through This Alone"

The thing that stuck with me most was when she said: "You just grew a human. Your body needs support — physical and emotional. Asking for help isn't weakness. Buying recovery garments isn't vanity. Taking time to heal isn't laziness." I cried in her office. It was the first time someone had validated what I was feeling.

What I Want Other New Moms to Know

Recovery is not linear. Some days you feel great, some days you feel broken. Both are normal. Get proper recovery garments early — not the cheapest ones on Amazon, but ones that actually stay in place and provide real support. See a pelvic floor specialist. And be patient with your body. It did something miraculous. Give it time.
